Behind the Scenes
October 2020 | Courtney Conway
As the seasons change and we ease into winter, we’re continuing to work hard behind the scenes at Space2, easing us all into the colder months with arts and wellbeing resources and the relaunch of activities new and old. Although we successfully relocated many of our courses onto zoom during the six months of the pandemic, we’re also delighted to announce that our face-to-face groups will be returning on the 5th October – we can’t wait to get everyone together again whilst of course implementing measures that ensure we all stay as safe as possible.
Although our face-to-face groups are recommencing, we’re still continuing to support in a variety of ways as we know the current climate is ever-changing. Our bi-weekly creative wellbeing packs are still continuing to head out to families across East Leeds and our recent ‘Home Sweet Home’ booklet contained buttons, fabric and a travel sewing kit as well as a how-to guide for that much needed inspiration – the full digital edition can be found here [link] along with a YouTube eco painting guide by artist by artist Carine Brosse.
We also managed to catch up with a couple of members of our Space2Sing choir, Jane and Gordon, who both filmed short pieces for us about the choir and their experience. It was great to see both Jane and Gordon in good spirits despite our current circumstances, cheefully explaining how the choir has kept going over lockdown and how the members have still managed to meet and have an all-important sing over Zoom. Over what has been an exceptional time it’s fantastic to see how our groups have managed to support each other, catch up and, in Jane’s own words, have a bit of a laugh! The choir is relaunching this coming Autumn and new faces are always welcomed.
Elsewhere, alongside celebrating long-running groups there’s been new groups and events to get invovled in to get the Autumn off to a positive start! Our Natural Crafts group will be running in November and will provide detailed and creative workshops related to creating beautiful lanterns, branch weaving, and the ancient art of extracting leaf pigment for painting. This is a great opportunity to make personal, natural and sustainable artwork. We are also launching an exciting new walking group – Wednesday Walks. The weekly walks will begin on the 21st October and will take advantage of the lush greenery around East Leeds, exploring places such as Temple Newsam, Primrose Valley Park and Wykebeck Valley. These areas are teeming with wildlife, woodland and meadows and are a great chance to appreciate the vast array of nature at the heart of East Leeds. We can’t wait to explore them, wrapped up warm with a hot drink of course!
We're extremely proud of our local communities and the people we work with, who have managed to maintain community spirit and social connection in the most exceptional of circumstances over this global pandemic. We hope the events and groups we are running over winter can help maintain this social cohesion and remind us all to keep flourishing and keep connecting in the face of adversity.
With warm wishes,
The Space2 team
