Built in 1937, The Old Fire Station was de-commissioned three years ago and restored into a bright and vibrant hub of activity, serving the community of East Leeds. It was made possible by a grant from Jimbo’s Fund, as part of the Leeds Community Foundation, and completed in August 2017. Many of the original features have been retained, such as fireman poles, flooring and tiles, and old pumps, and of course the unmistakable fire station red!
The East Leeds Heritage Fire Fighters Group co-produce a year-round programme of activities encouraging local people to visit and use the facilities at The Old Fire Station, as well as celebrating the history of the building by further developing the museum established there and hosting guided tours. Much of this draws upon Space2’s Glowing Embers project, a celebration of the history and heritage of The Old Fire Station through the stories and memories created there and where this group was founded.
Our volunteers continue to celebrate The Old Fire Station and its many purposes both past and present:
‘This building was initially built to serve the growing population in East Leeds, and I’d like to make sure we keep it as a focal point. I want the building to go from strength to strength and reach out even more to the local community’.
We look forward to continuing to showcase and celebrate the rich heritage of East Leeds through one of its most iconic buildings and continuing to make conversation with those who have worked, learned, danced and grown within the space.
